Struggling with Hair Loss? Proven Treatments from a Board-Certified Dermatologist

At Miami Dermatology & Skin Care, we know that thinning hair can feel overwhelming and deeply personal. Led by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Carlos Ricotti, MD, our experienced team provides advanced, medical-grade hair loss treatments.

From our office in Miami, Florida, we proudly serve patients from Miami, Fontainebleau, Coral Terrace, Sweetwater, University Park, Tamiami, and Westchester. If you're noticing more hair in the drain or a widening part, you don't have to navigate this journey alone.

The most effective medical treatments for hair loss

The most effective medical treatments for pattern hair loss include targeted topical therapies and oral medications that block the hormones responsible for thinning. For male pattern baldness, blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT) — the hormone that shrinks hair follicles — is the key to stopping hair loss and promoting regrowth.

While oral finasteride is a well-known option, clinical studies show that oral dutasteride can offer even stronger results. According to a comprehensive systematic review published in 2024, dutasteride blocks multiple enzymes responsible for DHT production, leading to a significantly higher increase in hair count compared to finasteride.

We also offer customized topical finasteride formulations, which target the scalp directly and minimize systemic absorption. Additionally, low-dose oral minoxidil has emerged as a highly convenient and effective alternative to daily topical foams.

Does finasteride always cause sexual side effects?

No, finasteride doesn’t always cause sexual side effects, and the vast majority of patients tolerate the medication exceptionally well. While online forums often amplify fears of permanent complications, scientific data tells a much more reassuring story.

A comprehensive review published in Frontiers in Medicine confirms that the absolute risk of experiencing sexual side effects on 1 mg of oral finasteride is very low, ranging from just 1.9% to 6.7%. Interestingly, patients in clinical trials who took a placebo (a harmless sugar pill) reported these same side effects at rates up to 3.9%. This highlights how anxiety and the "nocebo" effect play a major role in these concerns.

For most patients who do experience mild side effects, they completely resolve after stopping the medication or even with continued use.

Can biotin supplements cure pattern hair loss?

No, biotin supplements can’t cure genetic pattern hair loss or reverse autoimmune hair thinning. Despite aggressive marketing campaigns promoting vitamins as a miracle cure, there’s no scientific evidence that biotin increases hair density in healthy individuals.

Biotin is only helpful if you have an actual, clinically diagnosed biotin deficiency, which is highly rare. In fact, taking high doses of biotin can be dangerous because it interferes with critical blood tests, including thyroid panels and heart attack markers.

Instead of relying on over-the-counter supplements, seek a professional medical evaluation from our team to identify the root cause of your thinning.

If you're ready to stop guessing and start a clinically proven treatment plan, we're here to help. Our dedicated team can evaluate your unique scalp health and design a personalized strategy to restore your hair.
